Michael Cassel is an internationally recognised producer and entertainment executive, with credits including major theatrical productions, concerts, televised and special events.
Michael formed his company, Michael Cassel Group, to produce and present prestige theatrical productions; to create and develop exciting new live entertainment experiences and to present marquee events and concert attractions.
The company exclusively represents Cameron Mackintosh and his productions in Australia. In this capacity, Michael is Executive Producer of the acclaimed new production Les Misérables currently touring Asia with seasons in Manila, Singapore and Dubai, where the musical will officially open the Dubai Opera House. This follows a triumphant nineteen month tour of Australia where the production received the Helpmann Award for ‘Best Musical’.
Michael will produce the Australian première of Kinky Boots, the winner of six Broadway Tony® Awards including Best Musical, as well as Best Direction and Best Choreography by Jerry Mitchell and a book by Broadway legend and four-time Tony® Award-winner Harvey Fierstein. Kinky Boots will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne in October 2016.
The following year, Michael will produce smash-hit musical, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which will premiere in Sydney in September 2017 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. The true story of the legendary singer's journey from schoolgirl to international superstar features a book by Tony® and Academy® Award-nominee Douglas McGrath, direction by Marc Bruni, choreography by Josh Prince and a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil. The Broadway production won two Tony® Awards and the 2015 Grammy® Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
Michael also is also producing the Chichester Festival production of Singin’ In the Rain, which completed a tour throughout Asia with seasons in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila and South Africa, and is now touring throughout Australia.
In February 2017, Michael will present Lea Salonga in Concert. The Tony® and Olivier Award winning star will make her Sydney Opera House debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and will join Orchestra Victoria for concerts at Hamer Hall at The Arts Centre Melbourne.
In addition to his theatrical interests, Michael’s company represents former Australian Prime Minister, The Hon. Julia Gillard and media personality, Sami Lukis.
Michael’s ten-year tenure with Disney Theatrical Group, the live entertainment division of The Walt Disney Company, saw him hold a series of increasingly responsible senior management positions at the company in both the United States and Australia, most recently as Director, International based in New York City. In this role, Michael produced the company’s Broadway stage productions including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, AIDA, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid and High School Musical.
Michael also supported Disney on Ice and Disney Live! licensed to Feld Entertainment, in international markets. In addition, Michael oversaw the company’s second class and stock and amateur licensing initiatives with Music Theatre International. Highlights included launching new productions of The Lion King in Australia, China, South Africa, Taiwan and Singapore and, as Associate Producer, mounting new productions of Beauty and the Beast in South Africa, Brazil and Argentina and AIDA in Korea and Japan.
Michael commenced his professional career working with Australia’s foremost entertainment entrepreneur and celebrity manager, Harry M Miller.
Michael currently serves on the Executive Council of Live Performance Australia, the peak body for Australia’s live entertainment and performing arts industry.
